Hail Damage Roof Inspection & Repair in Amarillo
Hail rattled the windows last night? We connect you with one independent local roofer for an inspection. No cost to you, no obligation.
Hail damage on an asphalt shingle roof usually looks like dark spots where granules were knocked off, soft "bruises" that feel spongy when pressed, or cracked and torn shingles. It doesn't always leak right away, which is why a careful inspection soon after a storm matters. The Amarillo area sits in one of the most hail-prone parts of the country, so many homes here see a hail claim or two over a roof's life.
What should you do right after hail?
- Stay off the roof. Hail-pitted and wind-lifted shingles are slick, and a steep or wet roof is easy to fall from. Look from the yard, a window, or a ladder set at the eave only if you are steady and the ground is firm.
- Keep clear of downed power lines. Treat every fallen line as live. Call 911 and your electric utility (Xcel Energy serves much of the Amarillo area) from a safe distance.
- Take dated photos from the ground: dented gutters and downspouts, split window screens, dinged siding, AC fins, car damage, and any shingle pieces in the yard. If you can, measure a large hailstone next to a coin or ruler.
- Protect the inside. Set buckets under drips, move valuables, and keep everyone out of any room where the ceiling is bulging with water.
- Call your insurer if you think you have a claim, and ask how long you have to report it.
How do roofers find hail damage?
A thorough hail inspection looks at more than the shingles. A roofer will usually:
- Check soft metals first: gutters, downspouts, roof vents, turbine vents, flashing, and AC units. Dents there show the size and direction of the hail.
- Mark test squares (often 10 feet by 10 feet) on each roof slope and count hits inside them. Many insurers look at hits per square when deciding whether a slope needs replacement.
- Look for bruises, where the mat under the granules is fractured even though the surface looks intact.
- Check ridge caps and hips, which take direct hits and often crack first.
- Note older damage and wear separately, since blistering, cracking from age, and foot traffic can look similar to hail.
Does every hailstorm damage a roof?
No. Damage depends on hailstone size and density, wind speed during the storm, the age and type of shingles, and the slope facing the storm. Hail around an inch across can start to damage older or lighter shingles, while impact-rated shingles tend to hold up better. The National Weather Service office in Amarillo posts storm reports that can help you and your insurer pin down the date and size of a storm.
Repair or replace after hail?
A few cracked shingles or a dented vent can often be repaired. When hits are spread across whole slopes, or when the roof is older and the shingles are brittle, replacement may make more sense, because new shingles patched into a worn roof rarely seal or match well. See roof repair vs. replacement.
What about metal roofs, siding, and outbuildings?
Hail dents metal roofs, garage doors, barns, and shop buildings too. Dents that don't let water in may be treated as "cosmetic" by some policies, so read your policy for a cosmetic damage exclusion. Include every structure in your inspection request so nothing gets missed. See metal roofing.
How do you check a roofer in Amarillo?
Texas does not have a statewide license for roofing contractors, so local checks matter more. The City of Amarillo requires roofing contractors working in the city to register with Building Safety and to pull permits for most re-roofs; confirm current rules on the City of Amarillo Building Safety roofing information page. Ask for proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation, a written contract, and a local address you can verify. Read our storm chaser warning signs before you sign anything after a big storm.
What affects the cost?
We don't publish prices because they vary widely. Roof size and pitch, the shingle or metal product, how many layers come off, decking repairs, vents and flashing, permit fees, and post-storm demand all matter. If your insurer is paying, the scope in the adjuster's estimate and the roofer's estimate should line up; ask the roofer to explain any differences in writing.
What should you keep for your records?
Keep a simple storm file: the date of the storm, your photos, the claim number if you file, the inspection report and photos from the roofer, the adjuster's estimate, and the final invoice. Note the shingle product and color that went on the roof. If another storm hits in a few years, that record helps the next roofer and adjuster tell old damage from new damage quickly.
Frequently asked questions
How soon after hail should I get my roof inspected?
As soon as it's safe and practical. Hidden damage can lead to leaks later, and many policies require prompt notice of a loss. Ask your insurer about its reporting deadline.
Can hail damage be there even if I don't see anything from the ground?
Yes. Bruises and granule loss are hard to see from below. Dented gutters, vents, or AC fins are a clue that the roof was hit too.
Will one or two hits mean a new roof?
Usually not. Isolated damage is often repaired. Replacement decisions depend on how widespread the damage is, the roof's age, and your policy terms.
Should I climb up and check myself?
No. Leave the roof to a roofer with proper safety gear. Photograph what you can from the ground instead.
