Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are shingles that passed the highest level of the UL 2218 impact test, in which steel balls up to two inches across are dropped on a sample without cracking it through. In a hail region like the Texas Panhandle, many homeowners choose them when replacing a roof to reduce the chance of damage from the next storm. They are more resistant, not hail-proof.

What does the Class 4 rating actually mean?

UL 2218 ranks roofing from Class 1 to Class 4 based on the largest steel ball the product survives without cracking. Class 4 is the top rating. It's a lab test on new material, so real hail, which comes in many sizes, shapes, and speeds, can still damage a Class 4 roof, especially very large stones. Another test, FM 4473, uses ice balls and is used for some products. Ask which test applies to the product you're quoting.

What kinds of Class 4 roofing are there?

  • Modified asphalt (SBS) shingles: rubber-modified asphalt that flexes on impact. They look like standard architectural shingles.
  • Reinforced asphalt shingles with a strengthening layer on the back.
  • Metal roofing: many metal panels and shingles carry a Class 4 rating, though they can still dent. See metal roofing.
  • Synthetic and composite shingles designed to look like slate or shake.

Can Class 4 shingles lower your insurance premium?

Possibly. Many Texas insurers offer premium discounts for qualifying impact-resistant roofs, and the amount and rules vary by company. Before you buy, ask your insurer what it offers, which products qualify, and what proof it needs, such as a product label, invoice, or a certificate from the installer. Also ask whether choosing an impact-resistant roof changes how future claims would be handled, including any cosmetic damage exclusion.

What are the trade-offs?

  • Cost: Class 4 products usually cost more than standard shingles. Whether a discount offsets it depends on your policy and how long you stay in the home.
  • Installation matters: the rating only helps if the roof is installed to the maker's instructions. Ask for the specific product line and the installation method in the contract.
  • Weathering: some modified shingles become less flexible with age and sun. Ask the roofer and maker how the product has held up in high-UV, high-wind climates.
  • Not every component is rated: vents, skylights, and gutters can still be damaged.

Do Class 4 shingles help with wind?

Impact rating and wind rating are separate. Many Class 4 shingles also carry high wind ratings, but only when installed with the specified nailing pattern and starter strips. In Amarillo's wind, ask about both ratings and the installation details that go with them. See wind damage roof repair.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • What is the exact product name, and what test does its impact rating come from?
  • What wind rating does it carry, and what installation is required for it?
  • What warranty comes from the maker, and what does the installer's workmanship warranty cover?
  • What documentation will I get for my insurer?
  • Will new vents and flashing be installed, and are any of them impact-rated?

Is it worth upgrading during an insurance replacement?

Some homeowners pay the difference to upgrade from the standard shingle the insurer pays for. If you do, get the upgrade in writing as a separate line item, and confirm it with your insurer. We can't tell you whether it's worth it for your home; a roofer can give you options and estimates so you can decide. See roof repair vs. replacement.

Keep the proof

If you install impact-resistant roofing, keep the product wrapper label or a photo of it, the invoice listing the exact product, and any certificate the installer provides. Insurers that offer discounts often ask for documentation, and you may need it again if you change insurers or sell the home. Store copies with your policy.

Frequently asked questions

Are Class 4 shingles hail-proof?

No. They resist impact better than standard shingles in testing, but very large hail can still damage them.

Do I get an insurance discount for Class 4 shingles?

Many Texas insurers offer one, but the amount and rules vary. Ask your insurer before you buy and keep the paperwork it needs.

Do Class 4 shingles look different?

Most look like regular architectural shingles. Some synthetic products are made to look like slate or wood shake.

Can I add Class 4 shingles over my old roof?

Overlaying is not recommended for most products and may affect warranties and ratings. Most roofers tear off the old roof first.
